Antique Market Extravaganza in PA
2 hour drive + 2 hours shopping = 18 pieces added to my collection

The Renningers Antiques Extravaganza is held three times a year in Pennsylvania and Florida; I attended the show in Kutztown, PA on Saturday; endless tents and aisles of exhibitors hoping to sell you exactly what you're looking for...or not looking for.


Ranging from furniture, antique kitchen-ware to ancient cameras, I made a beeline for anyone with jewelry but I bought almost all my pieces from my usual jewelry counter located inside the indoor market, thank goodness she was still open. Probably spent an hour here...couldn't help it, look at all the pretty stuff.

We then made our usual stop at The Attic on the way out, a thrift shop that has a wide range of clothes but isn't overwhelming like other stores can be. They were playing Ladyhawke's new album so I was having fun dancing and singing along in the hallways. We always leave with something, for me it was a black purse that I was in dire need of.

Continuing on the shopping high, I found myself at another outdoor market in the Upper West Side, looking at everything but jewelry. I did buy a top but after 20 minutes of perusing, I hurried myself out of there before I did more damage.

Iron & Wine- Around the Well
Quintessential Americana folk, Samuel Beam showcases his vocal and guitar talent. Reminiscent of Ray LaMontagne and Bon Iver.

Passion Pit- Manners
Passion Pit blends in well with some of the electronica veterns (Cut Copy, The Radio Dept.), seamlessly threading synthesizers with the music and lyrics of their songs. Hopefully we'll be hearing them in clubs soon enough. Listen to 'Folds In Your Hands.'

White Rabbits- It's Frightening
Despite the performance I missed last September, I am still a fan of the Brooklyn-based White Rabbits, listen to 'Percussion Gun.'

Eat & Drink

I have no pictures (okay, I have a couple but you can't see the place or food), only recommendations and links. I never bring my camera because a) it sucks b) my friends always have their cameras.

2009 has been a busy year trying new places. With birthdays, restaurant week, visiting family, I have an excuse to explore and try new places.

Here's a recap of what I tried and liked for my birthday.

EN Japanese Brasserie

Nice casual bar/waiting area, wide open space with high ceilings, open kitchen
- Freshly made tofu: great taste and texture with a good accompanying dipping sauce.
- Pork Belly: sounds gross but it's oh so tender and exploding with flavor!
- Warm Sake: warms your soul...

Sweet Revenge
Genius. Dessert and alcohol. That's always the dilemma, dessert or drinks after dinner and this place has both.

- Crimson & Cream cupcake: raspberry red velvet with cream cheese frosting
- Beer Cocktails and wine...perfect with your dessert!

Angel's Share
Beautiful, quiet space overlooking 9th st. despite being behind an inconspicuous door in a loud Japanese restaurant. Perfect date place. No parties over 4. Not so secret anymore.

- Earl Grey Vodka: oh yes.
- Only remember my drink. haha. I did notice ice cubes cut in various ways specifically for each drink.

Crif Dogs
Not so fancy place serving fancy hot dogs. Bacon-wrapped hot dogs. Good, if you're a hot dog person.
- Fun: hidden bathroom.
- Not so fun: hidden bar, didn't make reservations, was full on a Monday night. Fine! We went elsewhere to...

Apotheke
Very dark, apothecary-themed bar in Chinatown. Yes, Chinatown! Bartenders wear lab coats. A cheesy show involving horribly-themed music, a bartender, drinks on the counter and fire.
- Strawberry drink, good.
